Holiday eating tips
We all love gathering with family and friends during the “most
wonderful time of the year.” But remember, overeating heavy
holiday foods, drinking too much alcohol and caffeine can cause
dreaded heartburn and indigestion.
The most popular holiday pastime in many families
is settling in to watch the big game with a full belly. Unfortunately,
when you lean back in that recliner or sprawl out on the couch,
you’re tilting your stomach and letting stomach acid build
up into your esophagus, which causes heartburn.
Worst Heartburn offenders
Onions, chocolate, citrus juices, tomatoes, soft drinks, coffee
and alcohol. Avoid holiday tummy troubles avoid these trigger foods.
If you must indulge, just have a small bite or tiny sip
Avoid Bed Burn
Avoid waking up at 2AM with a stomachache or burning sensation in
the back of your throat. Don’t eat close to bedtime. Stop
eating at least four hours before turning in.
Be a Nibbler
Don’t eat everything in front of you. Stick to the foods you
really love and eat small portions of them. Then wait 20 minutes
before seconds.
To Go please
Most hosts love if you ask to take a doggy bag. Take some home instead
of gorging…then you can bring back the lovely memories with
every bite at home.
Loosen that belt
The tight belt causes the digestive system to flow food properly
from your stomach to your GI. Loosen it.
Walk it off
Take a brisk walk around the block. A good way to continue fun holiday
gossip or catching up to do while moving your digestive system along
and burning calories
If all else fails---Be proactive Over
the counter works if needed
About an hour before sitting down for that big meal, take a tums
or prolesic or any over the counter digestive aid or heartburn med.
