You can certainly keep a haircut that's growing out fresh and stylish as you wait for the locks to reach your shoulders, says Oscar James, one of Hollywood's mane men with a client roster that includes Iman, Mary J. Blige and Tyra Banks. We caught up with the fabulous stylist at the Golden Globes where he was getting Jada Pinkett Smith ready for the red carpet. Oscar gave us some advice on how to grow out a cut without losing the style.

Play Up the Bangs
Long bangs that are growing out are easy to manage and you get to experiment with a number of different looks. "When bangs are long enough to get into your eyes, they can get a little bothersome. So comb them to the side or part them in the middle," Oscar recommends. "Sweeping the hair back with a band works really well too," he says. And for a fabulous effect, try a modern 'pompadour.' "Simply sweep the bangs back and bring them slightly forward, pinning the hair in place with a beautiful hair accessory."

Try Tousled Waves or Braids
A fun way to deal with an unruly cut is to change the texture. "Try adding waves to long layers," Oscar suggests, "[or] wear braids or twists." Oscar adds, "I often recommend the braided weave for my clients who are trying to grow out a cut. That's when you braid up the entire hair and leave out very little along the hairline. This style will cover your haircut completely until you are ready to wear it out again," he assures.

Lengthen With Extensions
When your hair is too short to be braided or swept to the side, try adding a few hairpieces to enhance your look. "Hair extensions come in handy when you are between cuts and don't want to wait until your hair is long again to wear it out," Oscar tells us.

Oscar's Tips
Start Slow
If you don't want to commit to a haircut because you are not sure how you'll deal with it when it begins to grow out, go with long layers. Layers grow out pretty gracefully and blend well with the rest of your hair.

Maintain Your Cut
There's something special about a signature look that you get to own. So if you like your haircut, keep it looking fresh by getting a touch-up every 6 weeks.

Cut Your Hair With A Skilled Stylist
Remember, if it's a great haircut, it will keep the shape and look great even when your hair starts getting longer. So don't be afraid to experiment with different styles until you find what works for you.
